Podcast #211 - Sunrise at Mount Vernon

Hello. Several weeks ago I was very fortunate to participate in the 2010 Gilder Lehrman Summer Seminar for Teachers at Mount Vernon. One great opportunity while attending the seminar was the opportunity to stay on the grounds at Mount Vernon. On a couple of the mornings I got up around 5:15 AM and walked to the mansion to see the sunrise over the Potomac River from the back porch. Today's podcast is a very quick reflection on that experience. I have also added several of the pictures from that morning at the mansion with this blog post.

  1. Wow, the pictures that you have taken are gorgeous. What an awesome experience this must have been. I am so glad that the grounds people at Mount Vernon have made it a mission of theirs to keep the view as it was when George Washington sat out on that porch. It is so hard to find places now days that are free from tall buildings and condos. It sounds and looks like you enjoyed your visit to Mount Vernon and gained a lot of great knowledge from your experience.

  2. Thanks for sharing that experience. The grounds truly are beautiful. Your podcast really helped me visualize Mt. Vernon and how Washington viewed his home. I think it is so important to make these experiences "real" for our students. You do a great job using technology to expand their classroom boundary. I have commented on your last 2 posts as an assignment for my EDM 310 class and will post more about your blog on my own blog- www.keykristinedm310.blogspot.com

  3. Mount Vernon sounds like an amazing place. I can only imagine how beautiful the sunrise is. It was cool to listen to you talk about Mount Vernon has been preserved. Like you said, I hope that it remains like it is today so in the future people will be able to enjoy Mount Vernon like you have. The pictures are great to look at of the sunset. Sound like you had a great time.

I wish I had experience Mount Vernon! I one day hope to take my little brother to take in the experience. It seems like you've really enjoyed your stay. I know your setudents will benefit from your story telling.

  6. I love the fact that you can bring these pictures back into the classroom with you and have more of a visual presentation to inspire and inform you students. Maybe it will keep them more interested in the subject than just reading about it. These are great pictures, thank you for sharing them.
