Podcast #203 - History Geek Author Visit - Author, Historian and Illustrator Cheryl Harness

Last year I started a group at South Valley Jr. High called the "History Geeks". It is an extracurricular group to provide students opportunities to explore historical topics - a field trip to a historic site, a book club which reads an historical book and providing historically themed speakers. During the school year we try to have one historic speaker a month. Last week we started our historical speaker programs with Cheryl Harness sharing her experience as an author, historian and illustrator.

Cheryl is an incredible artist how also writes historical biographies. Her work is well known nationally and associated with National Geographic. Our students enjoyed listening to Cheryl discuss her start in art and how she researches her books. The podcast today is the audio from Cheryl's presentation and is about 50 minutes in length.

If you have any thoughts you'd like to share please leave a comment on this blog. Thanks.

Smithsonian Presetation to Teacher Ambassadors

Last year I had the honor of participating in Smithsonian Teacher Day 2008 in Washington DC as the Missouri Teacher of the Year (2007/2008). Smithsonian Education gave us behind the scenes access to their museums and staff. They also gave us materials as Smithsonian Teacher Ambassadors which we could share with other teachers to share information on all the Smithsonian has to offer educators. Last year I did several podcasts and a couple of screen cast videos to share Smithsonian resources.

Today I have the privilege of sharing some of these techniques with the current state teachers of the year from around the country as they participate in Smithsonian Teacher Day 2009. I have included the presentation below via SlideShare and links to the podcasts, screen casts and applications that I mention in the presentation.

Podcast #180 - Speech on "Opportunity" for Parents and Students at Platte County Schools

Hello. Today's podcast is the audio recording of a speech I recently gave at an academic banquet for students and parents at Platte County Schools in Platte City, Missouri. I typically give presentations on technology, history or education so this speech was a little different for me. I tried to explain how others create opportunity for you and then you need to make the best of your own opportunities by telling some stories and sharing examples. The podcast is the audio of the presentation and I have included the presentation below if you are interested in the images the audience saw that night.

If you have any questions or thoughts please feel free to leave a comment on this blog post. Thanks for listening.

Free Webinar on Zunes in the Classroom January 6th

Hello. Just wanted to let you know I will be hosting a free Microsoft Tech Tuesday webinar describing how we have been using Zune MP3 players in our classroom at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, January 6,2009. Follow this link to register for the webinar and learn more.

I have been piloting the use of the Zune MP3 player in my classroom for the past two years. In one of my 8th grade American history classes each student has a 4GB Zune MP3 player. I use it to give them StudyCasts, history related podcasts, video and copies of the presentation notes. It has been an exciting project and my students love it. The webinar will be an opportunity for me to describe the project in more depth. This webinar is also scheduled to repeat on March 10, 2009 if you can't make it on Tuesday.

At the end of the webinar one lucky participant will win a 120 GB Zune MP3 player! It could be you. Hope to see some of you on Tuesday. If you have any questions please leave a comment or sent me an e-mail. Thanks.

Podcast #139 - Speech at 2008 Missouri Daughters of the American Revolution Banquet

Hello. This year as I have the honor of traveling the state to as the Missouri Teacher of the Year at banquets, conferences and conventions I often record the presentation with my portable iRiver MP3 player. I usually don't produce the presentation but at times it does fit into one of the three themes of this podcast - education, history or technology. Today I am podcasting the speech I gave at the 2008 Missouri Daughters of the American Revolution banquet held on April 5 in Columbia, Missouri. It is a great organization that does amazing things to promote American history in our schools through student contests and scholarships.

Podcast #84 - Living History Presentation with Zelarda James, Mother of Jesse James

Hello. Each spring the city of Liberty has a festival. This spring it was renamed the "Liberty Heritage Festival" to help celebrate our local history. There are historical presentations, funnel cakes, crafts, etc. One of the presentations was by Dianne Moran who gave living history presentations as Zerelda James Samuels, the mother of Jesse James. The James family lived near Liberty and is part of our local history. She did an excellent job of bringing Zerelda to life. The podcast is her presentation as Zerelda James Samuels and a short interview. Special thanks to Dianne for an excellent presentation and allowing me to share it with the Speaking of History audience.

Podcast #30 - Will Richardson on Web 2.0 at the Discovery Educator Network Midwest Regional Summer Institute

Welcome to day 2 at the Discovery Educator Network Midwest Regional Summer Institute. Today we are exploring the world of Web 2.0 tools and our tour guide is none other than Will Richardson. Will showed us some great examples of these tools being used in education, discussed some of the social aspects of our students using social networks and some thoughts about how these tools are changing the face of education - or rather, how they SHOULD be changing the current face of education.

Thoughts from Will about Education and Web 2.0

1. Schools are closed but should be open and accessible

2. Change from individual learning spaces to collaborative learning networks

3. From "just in case learning" to "just in time learning"

4. Change from text to multimedia

5. Change from working alone for an audience of one to working together for an audience of many

6. Students performing as teachers

Podcast #29 - DEN Midwest Regional Summer Institute - Digital Storytelling with Hall Davidson - Part A and B

The Discovery Educator Network Midwest Summer Institute in Chicago got off to a bang with a presentation by Hall Davidson on digital storytelling. Hall set the tone for the week of creating media by showing us some great examples of how we can help empower our students to become active producers of media rather than just passive consumers. The presentation has been divided into two podcasts for the case of length - part A and part B.

Participants were treated to a great Chicago style BBQ and we all became more aquainted with the other great teachers we will be working with for the next several days. The excitement level is high, the facility here at the University Center is tremendous and the buzz in the room tells me that we will be doing some amazing things.

I edited this podcast on Sunday night as a thunderstorm rolled into the Chicago area. It was quite a sight as the sky lit up around the downtown skyline and the outline of the majestic buildings. I still can't get over the view from my window. I grew up in a small Nebraska town of around 600 people so the sight of Sears Tower, which I visited once on vacation as a child, is still pretty cool.

Time to get to bed and get ready for day two. Stay tuned for more from Chicago.
